Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

Laser technology is approved by Health Canada as a method of permanent hair reduction, but there is not enough evidence to indicate that it can permanently remove hair. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines permanent hair reduction as “the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs re-growing after a treatment regime, which may include several sessions.” Because hair grows in stages, compete laser treatment requires a program of multiple sessions to target hair follicles at each stage of hair growth.

During a treatment program, the hair growth experienced between sessions will progressively decrease. In the interim, any hair that does grow can be removed by shaving until it can be targeted by the laser therapy at the next treatment session. Note, however, shaving should be avoided in the week leading up to the next treatment. Complete re-growth of hair in a treatment area is extremely rare, but can be experienced, most often occurring among individuals with very light coloured hair. Canadian and American government regulations state that laser hair removal providers can not guarantee permanent hair removal. However, following a quality treatment program, most individuals will experience at least an 80% permanent reduction in hair growth.
