There are five major types of laser hair removal systems used in Vancouver, and within each of these types are several different manufactured brands. Here, we provide an overview of the five types of laser hair removal systems.

Ruby Laser

The Ruby Laser is the original laser used for hair removal. The Ruby Laser can only treat dark hair on light skin, and because of this limitation it has become less popular in recent years.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Devices

IPL (Intense pulse Light) devices are not actually lasers, but do use the same technology which allows light to disrupt hair growth in the follicle. Unlike lasers, IPL do not use one specific wavelength, rather a range of wavelengths. The effectiveness between IPL and Lasers is an area scientists, equipment manufacturers and practitioners can’t seem to agree on, but results are generally accepted to be roughly equivalent. Because wavelength can be controlled by the practitioner, IPLs require a very experienced operator.

Alexandrite Laser

The Alexandrite laser is favoured for removing hair from large areas of the body, such as the back, because of its fast treatment time. It works best on light skin tones, but can be used on those with slightly olive complexion as well.

Diode Laser

The Diode Laser, like the Alexandrite, also works well on removing hair from large body areas due to its efficiency. Unlike the Alexandrite, however, this laser is favoured for treating dark skin tones.

Long Pulse Nd:YAG Laser

The Long Pulse Nd:YAG laser is very fast. the Nd:YAG system can be used on any complexion, from pale to dark. It’s also a very time-efficient laser.
