‘Micro’ refers to the small particles used in the ‘crystal’ method of microdermabrasion. This process is completed on a microscopic level that is largely invisible to the naked eye. ‘Derm’ refers to the dermis, which is more commonly known as the skin. And finally, ‘abrasion’ refers to the process of ‘scrubbing’ the skin to remove the topmost layer, helping to reduce and eliminate blemishes and other surface imperfections.

Our Vancouver microdermabrasion treatment clinic uses the DiamondTome system for microdermabrasio, rather than the older ‘crystal’ method. We firmly believe in the more advanced DiamondTome technology.

The crystal methods utilize aluminum oxide (or other types of crystals), shooting a steady stream of particulate matter at the surface of the skin. These crystals scrape off the dead skin cells, not unlike what you may see with sandblasting, to restore and refurbish an older building. Sandblasting can smooth an otherwise rough surface and the ‘crystal’ method of microdermabrasion has a similar effect on the skin. The particulate matter is then vacuumed away with a suction device, along with the dead skin cells and surface dirt that were removed as part of the crystal microdermabrasion.

The high-speed flow of aluminum oxide crystals can be very effective in removing the topmost layer of skin, but it can also be very abrasive. This can result in discomfort and pain. As such, the crystal based method may not be appropriate for more sensitive skin, or more sensitive clients.

Rather than utilizing fine particulate matter to ‘blast’ away at the surface of the skin, the DiamondTome machines have specialized wands tipped with natural diamond chips. The tips of these wands vary in size and coarseness, depending on the specific needs of the client’s skin. Instead of shooting aluminum oxide crystals, the wands are applied directly to the surface of the skin.

What this means is that exfoliation only occurs where the wand is drawn across the skin, providing the skin specialist with a greater degree of accuracy and precision compared to other skin resurfacing systems. The skin specialist can work more accurately on sensitive areas, as they are able to focus on the most specific areas of skin when treating a client. Since there are different sizes and coarseness offered by the different DiamondTome wands, the clinician can also select the most appropriate level of exfoliation to produce the best results; while still retaining the greatest level of comfort for the patient.

Since there is no particulate matter involved, there is a much lower risk of crystals and other matter mistakenly going into the eyes or other highly sensitive areas of the face and neck. It also means that fine particulate matter from the machine is not accidentally left on the surface of the skin after treatment. Since there are no crystals being used, there are no abrasives to contaminate the skin or the environment when a treatment session has concluded.

The natural diamond tips used in the DiamondTome system at our Vancouver microdermabrasion clinic are less likely to irritate the skin or otherwise cause discomfort to the client. Also, the natural diamond chips are less likely to trigger allergic or other adverse reactions. Clients with sensitive skin usually prefer DiamondTome over the crystal methods of microdermabrasion, as DiamondTome can be considerably gentler. The alternative microdermabrasion treatments in Vancouver can sometimes cause burning sensations, skin irritation, and adverse skin reactions. Such is not the case with diamond-based, crystal-free microdermabrasion at Vancouver’s Electra Laser.
