More and more people are talking about IPL photo facials, and for good reason. IPL is short for intense pulsed light, a skin rejuvenation technology used to treat people across a wide range of ages, skin types, and skin conditions.
”Photo’ refers to the bursts of light and ‘facial’ refers to the treatments for the face and neck region. Intense pulsed light therapy utilizes highly concentrated and highly intense beams of light shone intermittently on the surface of the skin. These bursts of light, which last a very short period of time, are successfully used to treat all kinds of skin conditions.
Skin conditions treated with IPL include rosacea associated with acne, vascular birth marks, uneven pigmentation, sun damage, broken capillaries, stretch marks, scarring, freckles, and more. The pulses of light are not necessarily the same, as different wavelengths of light have different effects, not only the surface of the skin, but also on the the deeper layers. For instance, some of the intense pulsed light can target bacteria that live below the surface of the skin. By killing the bacteria, patients can exhibit less acne.

Vancouver IPL Photofacials
Also known as photorejuvenation, intense pulsed light therapy works to reduce the effects of aging, providing you with younger, clearer, and more healthy looking skin. The pulses of light target pigment and vascular irregularities, smoothing out the skin’s tone and texture. IPL photo facials may not be as effective on significant wrinkles, however complementary treatments can address deep wrinkles, while IPL can addresses different types of skin concerns. IPL is often used in conjunction with chemical peels and/or microdermabrasion.
Clients who are concerned about physical discomfort sometimes associated with laser therapy, may be apprehensive about intense pulsed light therapy as well. While individual experiences may vary, most clients describe IPL as similar to a gentle snap of a rubber band. That’s because the IPL process involves light energy being absorbed by the skin rather quickly, heating it up in a brief instant in time. Some patients describe it as being like a short pin prick. There is no anaesthesia required, however we cool the skin, which is useful in minimizing any discomfort you might experience.
The light emitted during intense pulsed light therapy is filtered to remove any ultraviolet components, thus casting out any possible concerns about UV damage to the skin. IPL is safe for nearly everyone, although very dark skinned clients might want to opt for a different treatment protocol; this is because IPL can affect pigmentation levels.
Since the pulses of light produced by IPL are very targeted and very short, clients may see small raised bumps and red discolouration around the treatment area shortly after a session. These subside in a few days and are no cause for alarm.
If you want to get rid of unsightly blemishes, persistent acne, and rosacea, intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a viable option for you to consider.
